While any type of food has the potential to trigger a reaction, in fact only nine major food allergens are responsible for most food allergies. If you or your child are experiencing symptoms, understanding the cause is an important first step.
Today, we’ll look at the common food allergies and their likely triggers – and we also detail the best food allergy treatments in our infographic shown below. Please consider sharing this vital information with friends and family via social media.
The Most Common Food Allergies
Nine major food allergens are recognized in U.S. law. This means that each of these foods or ingredients must be clearly labeled to give individuals and caregivers the information they need to prevent allergic reactions. According to the FDA the following allergens account for at least 90% of food allergies.
- Milk
- Eggs
- Fish
- Shellfish
- Tree nuts
- Peanuts
- Wheat
- Soybeans
- Sesame
Some of these allergens (such as milk and eggs) mainly affect young children. And while many kids eventually grow out of the allergy, this won’t always be the case. Other allergies (like shellfish) will often persist throughout a person’s life, and require a personalized food allergy management approach.
What Are the Triggers of a Food Allergy?
Preventing allergic reactions is challenging for those with a food allergy. Responses can be triggered in several ways.
Directly Consuming the Food
The most likely trigger comes from direct consumption of the food. For example, eating peanuts or peanut butter causes an immune system overreaction that leads to the symptoms of a peanut allergy.
Cross-Contamination During Food Preparation
Cross-contamination occurs when small amounts of an allergen are transferred to cooking equipment, utensils and/or surfaces. If these items are not thoroughly cleaned, trace amounts of an allergen can be introduced into another dish that was otherwise safe for consumption.
Hidden Allergen Ingredients
Identifying allergens requires careful scrutiny of ingredients and product labels. However, you might find certain processed foods that contain items unfamiliar to most people. For instance, casein – a milk protein that could trigger a reaction – can be found in some foods, and of course, dairy products.
